Sami Khedira Set for Keyhole Surgery on Injured Knee After Missing Sassuolo Draw

Juventus midfielder Sami Khedira is set to undergo keyhole surgery on his left knee this week after missing the club’s 2-2 draw with Sassuolo.

The 32-year-old has made 16 appearances across all competitions this season – including 16 consecutively – but after complaining about persistent pain in his knee, Khedira will undergo surgery.

Juventus confirmed that Khedira will return to Germany for the keyhole surgery, which will be performed by Professor Ulrich Boenisch.

While there’s no reason for it to be confirmed either way, it’s likely that Khedira will stay with his younger brother Rani – he’s on the books at FC Augsburg – in the immediate aftermath of his surgery.

Although Juventus have a plethora of midfielders who a ready to step in during Khedira’s absence, the 32-year-old has been a key player for Maurizio Sarri.

Only Miralem Pjanić has made more appearances that Khedira this season, but the likes of Emre CanAaron RamseyRodrigo Bentancur and Blaise Matuidi will now have the chance to step into Sarri’s first-team on a regular basis.

Summer signing Adrien Rabiot, who hasn’t started in the league since October, has missed Juventus’ last two matches through injury.

But the France international returned to full training on Tuesday and could now be in contention to return against Lazio this weekend.

The Bianconeri are coming into their match in the Italian capital looking to play catch up in the title race, having dropped points for the third time this season on Saturday.

Goals from former Chelsea forward Jeremie Boga and veteran striker Francesco Caputo snatched a point away from Juventus, something which allowed Inter to open up a one-point lead at the top of Serie A.

Two goals from Lautaro Martínez, taking his tally for the season up to eight, against SPAL were enough to send Antonio Conte’s side ahead of Juventus.
