Emre Can will have a medical at Borussia Dortmund on Friday ahead of an initial loan deal from Juventus that includes an obligation to buy for €30m (£25m) at the end of the season.
The former Liverpool midfielder has been interesting a host of sides across Europe this season after failing to nail down a starting berth under Maurizio Sarri, with the player eager to leave after being left out of Juventus’ Champions League squad at the start of the campaign.
He’s only made eight Serie A appearances this term after struggling to dislodge the likes of Adrien Rabiot, Miralem Pjanic, Blaise Matuidi, Rodrigo Bentancur and Aaron Ramsey in the side, prompting the likes of Manchester United, Everton and Tottenham to be linked with a January move.
However, Dortmund have won the race to sign the German, despite having a bid knocked back by the Serie A leaders earlier this window. The move will see him return to Bundesliga for the first time since he left Bayer Leverkusen in 2014, and he will put pen to paper on a deal worth £160k-a-week – a full £100k pay-cut on his current Juventus contract.
As reported by Goal, he will now undergo his medical on Friday ahead of a deadline day switch.
The reason for the move stems from a desire for Can to make it into Germany’s upcoming Euro 2020 squad, something he has struggled to nail down frequently due to his lack of involvement in Turin.
It’s a move that will bring an end to his 18-month stay at the Allianz Stadium, having joined the club from Liverpool on a free transfer after running his contract down. During his first season he featured heavily for the Old Lady, playing a total of 37 times in all competitions under previous boss Massimiliano Allegri.
He will become Lucien Favre’s second acquisition this January following the arrival of Norwegian goalscoring sensation Erling Braut Haaland from Red Bull Salzburg. If the move it completed in time, he could be registered to make his debut against Union Berlin in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
