Juventus Forward Gonzalo Higuain Reveals Desire to End Career at River Plate

Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain has revealed that he would like to end his career with boyhood club River Plate.

The Argentinian is currently enjoying his 14th season in European football after departing River Plate for Real Madrid in 2007.

Higuain’s Juventus contract expires in 2021, leading to speculation he could see out the twilight years of his career in the MLS – where his brother plays.

However, in an interview with Argentine TV channel TyC Sports (via Football Italia), the 32-year-old insisted his attention was currently fully with Juventus, but admitted a swan song at River did appeal to him.

“River is a club that gave me everything,” Higuain said. “From letting me develop to Real Madrid buying me, but right now I don’t know what’s going to happen. My head is here [in Turin].”

River are currently managed by Marcelo Gallardo, and the former Real Madrid striker admitted Gallardo and his style of play were part of the appeal.

“Gallardo’s team are very exciting, they have quality, strength, everything…

“The truth that you watch them and their No. 9 gets many chances. Clearly someone who played for River before will watch that team, see themselves there and say, ‘how nice’.

“Gallardo has caught everyone’s eyes and he’s earned it. I’d think about going back to River to retire.”

In April, Higuain’s father branded a return to River Plate ‘impossible’.

Higuain came through the esteemed River Plate academy, first joining the youth side in 1987 aged nine.

He broke into the first team as a 17-year-old, and within 18 months he had earned a €12m move to Spanish giants Real Madrid.

After six years and three La Liga titles, Higuain moved to Napoli, where he enjoyed three hugely prolific seasons prior to a €90m switch to Juventus in 2016.

Before the suspension of football, the forward had scored five goals in 23 Serie A appearances this season.
