It has been over 14 years since the club legend last won a league title and the midfielder says he hopes to end that drought this season
Miralem Pjanic says Roma want to win the Serie A title this season to honour Francesco Totti.
The 38-year-old has been in the Giallorossi first-team since 1992 but is now in the final year of his contract.
The Roma legend’s only Serie A title with the club came in 2000-01, while it has been seven years since he won his second and last Coppa Italia.
The club looked like challenging Juventus to the championship in each of the last two years but dropped out of the race, but Pjanic says he hopes this year is the one that sees Rudi Garcia’s men bring an end to the Turin side’s reign of dominance.
“We hope to win the title to give it to Totti,” he told Fox Australia. “When he’s on the pitch, everything is easier.
“I feel good and I’m happy, because Roma are doing everything to build an even stronger team than last year. Juve won the title last year because they were able to deal with the moments of pressure better than we were. This year we are motivated to try to conquer it.”
Roma have been linked with a move for Edin Dzeko and Pjanic echoed Totti’s opinion on the matter, insisting the Manchester City striker would add a lot to the Serie A side.
“We will see what will happen in the coming days, I talked to him, he is an important player who can give us a lot,” he added.
