Sami Khedira Undergoes Successful Knee Surgery & Set for 3 Month Layoff

Juventus midfielder Sami Khedira underwent successful knee surgery on Wednesday, the club has confirmed, and is set to miss three months of action.

The German has been struggling with a persistent injury to his left knee, and the club reported on Tuesday that Khedira would require an operation in order to rid himself of the issue.

The Turin giants have since confirmed that the procedure was successful but boss Maurizio Sarri will not be able to call on Khedira’s services until the early part of next year.

At 32, the World Cup winner is in the twilight of his career, but his 17 appearances this campaign suggests Sarri still values the veteran midfielder’s contribution.

Khedira is in his fourth season with Juventus, having arrived on a free transfer from Real Madrid in 2015. During his time in Turin, the German has been an ever-present in the side and has helped the Bianconeri to four consecutive league titles, as well as winning the Italian Cup three times.

In September 2018, Khedira’s value to the club was underlined by him signing a new deal which would keep him at the Allianz Stadium until 2021.

With the news of Khedira’s lay off, Sarri may now reconsider his stance on out of favour midfielder Emre Can – who looks destined to leave the reigning Serie A champions in January.

Can has outlined his unhappiness at his lack of playing time under Sarri and believes he has been frozen out this season, signalled by his omission from Juve’s Champions League squad.

The former Liverpool man had appeared destined to move in the winter transfer window and is a reported target for Manchester United.

However, Juve’s seemingly forgotten man did start in the weekend draw with Sassuolo at the weekend, and Can may receive his wish of more minutes under his belt in the wake of Khedira’s surgery.
